What Google Business Profile does for local SEO, for free

Updated Oct 8, 2026.

Google Business Profile lets you manage how your business shows up on Google Maps and Search “at no charge” (Google Business Profile Help). It’s for businesses that meet customers in person, such as shops and service businesses that visit their customers; Google says online-only businesses aren’t eligible. Check what the profile already gives you before you pay for a local SEO tool.

How Google ranks local results

Google says local results depend mainly on three things (Google Business Profile Help):

It also says: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.”

Google’s own tips are to verify your business, keep your details complete and accurate (address, hours including special hours, category, and extras such as parking or Wi-Fi), reply to reviews, and add photos and videos.

What the free profile gives you

Search data

A verified profile has a Performance page. It shows the search terms people used to find your business, updated at the start of each month, how many people viewed your profile or asked for directions, how many times people clicked your call button or website link, and how many message conversations you had. The figures include views and actions from both organic results and Google Ads (Google Business Profile Help).

A checklist for your profile

Verified profiles also get Google’s Profile Strength Indicator. It points out missing details such as your business description, hours and contact info, and suggests adding photos, videos and posts (Google Business Profile Help).

Posts

You can post updates, offers and events to your profile on Search and Maps, schedule them and set them to repeat. Posts older than six months are archived unless they have a date range (Google Business Profile Help).

Reviews and replies

Once your business is verified, you can reply to reviews. Google checks each reply against its content policies, which usually takes up to 10 minutes and sometimes up to 30 days, and tells the customer when you’ve replied (Google Business Profile Help).

To ask for reviews, Google suggests sending customers its review link or QR code. It strictly prohibits offering incentives, such as free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for posting or changing a review, or removing a negative one (Google Business Profile Help). Our Google review QR code maker turns the link into a printable sign.

In-store products

A store in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland or Australia can add its in-store products to Google “at no charge” through the Local Inventory app. Among Google’s conditions are a verified profile, a wired barcode scanner or compatible point-of-sale system, and products with manufacturer barcodes. The products may then show on Search, Maps and the Shopping tab (Google Business Profile Help).

Two checks before you pay for a local SEO tool

  1. Open your profile’s Performance page and Profile Strength first. They show which searches find you and what your profile is missing.
  2. Be wary of any tool or service that promises a higher place on Google Maps. Google says no one can pay for a better local ranking.
