How to choose an SEO reporting tool

Updated Oct 9, 2026.

Start with the free reports

Google Search Console is “a free service offered by Google” (Google Search Console Help). Its Performance report shows your clicks and impressions in Google Search, for the past three months by default, with other date ranges a click away, and many of its reports have an export button (Google Search Console Help). Google’s Data Studio builds dashboards and reports from your data and calls itself “easy and free” (Google). For one business checking its own numbers, that may be all you need.

Pay for what saves you time

Paid reporting tools are built for client reporting, the reports an agency sends its clients. One earns its price when you report on several sites or channels in one place, on a schedule, without building each report by hand.

If an agency reports to you, keep your own access

When an agency audits your site, Google suggests giving it read access to your Search Console, not write access (Google Search Central). Keep your own login too, so you can check the figures in any report against Google’s.

Ask where each number comes from

A good report says which tool each figure came from and the dates it covers. Search Console’s figures are Google’s own; figures for other sites, or positions from a rank tracker, come from whichever tool measured them. If a report mixes them, check that it labels each one.
